Essential cleaning tools for laptops and computers: microfiber cloth, compressed air can, and isopropyl alcohol

Keeping your computer clean is a vital part of keeping it running well.

How to Safely Clean Your Laptop or Computer

Keep Your Device Looking and Running Like New

Laptops and computers are like the unsung heroes of our daily lives. We use them for work, school, entertainment, and everything in between. But as time passes, they start to collect dust, fingerprints, and grime—just like any hardworking tool. Here's the good news: with just a little effort and the right steps, you can safely keep your laptop or computer clean and in great shape, all without causing any damage.

Let’s break it down step by step so you can clean your device the right way—and keep it running smoothly for years to come.

Step 1: Gather Your Cleaning Supplies

Before you begin, it’s important to have the proper tools. Cleaning your computer is not something you want to "wing" with whatever supplies are lying around. Using the wrong materials can cause damage or leave behind streaks and residue. Here’s what you’ll need to gather:

  • A soft microfiber cloth – Perfect for screens and sensitive surfaces
  • Compressed air – Great for cleaning dust out of tight spaces
  • A small soft brush – Helps with cleaning ports, vents, and crevices
  • Isopropyl alcohol (at least 70%) – For disinfecting and handling sticky residue

With these items handy, you’re ready to clean your device carefully and efficiently.

Step 2: Power Down and Unplug

Before doing any cleaning, make sure your device is powered off and unplugged from any power source. This prevents accidental button presses and reduces the risk of a short circuit or damage. Take an extra minute to unplug accessories like external hard drives, USB devices, and power cords while you’re at it.

Studies have shown your computer and computer desk can be up to 400 times dirtier than your toilet - and it gets cleaned and sanitized less often too.

Step 3: Clean the Exterior

Start with the exterior of your device. Use your microfiber cloth to gently wipe the outer casing, trackpad, and keyboard. For those hard-to-reach spots, like between the keys, use your compressed air can. Hold the can at an angle and spray short bursts to loosen crumbs and dust.

Don’t skip cleaning the USB ports on the side of your computer. These often collect dust, and a quick burst of compressed air can clear them out. Make sure to avoid spraying directly into ports with excessive force—gentle is the key.

Step 4: Tackle Stubborn Grime

Some surfaces, like palm rests and corners, can develop dirt buildup or greasy fingerprints that won’t wipe off with a dry cloth. For stubborn spots, dampen a corner of your microfiber cloth with isopropyl alcohol. Make sure the cloth is only slightly damp—direct liquid contact with your computer can be harmful.

Avoid drenching the cloth or spraying any liquid directly onto your computer surface. This step ensures a safe and effective way to deep clean without risking damage to internal components.

Step 5: Remove Internal Dust

Over time, dust collects inside your computer, especially in desktops and laptops with cooling fans. This can cause overheating or slower performance. If you're comfortable doing so, carefully open your computer’s case (be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions). Using a soft brush or compressed air, gently clean the dust off fans, vents, and other components.

Don't feel confident opening it yourself? No problem—this is something we can help with at The Computer Solution.

Step 6: Shine Up the Screen

Your screen is one of the most noticeable and delicate parts of your computer. Use a clean microfiber cloth to gently wipe away dust and smudges. If your screen has fingerprints or oily marks, lightly dampen your cloth with a mixture of water and isopropyl alcohol (50/50 ratio) and gently clean the surface.

Make sure never to spray liquid directly onto the screen, as it can seep into the edges and damage the electronics inside.

Step 7: Establish a Maintenance Routine

Cleaning your device every three to six months can go a long way in keeping it in excellent shape. Create a cleaning schedule for both the exterior and interior, while checking for software updates and running antivirus scans regularly.
